The nephron is the functional unit of the kidney, consisting of a glomerulus ("bag of worms") at one end, with a U-shaped hair-pin loop called the "loop of Henle" in the mid-portion, and terminating at the urine collecting duct. As blood filters into the nephron to make its way to the urine collecting duct, the minor miracle of water transmutating into urine is complete.
