Yes, it can. It may lead to blood in the urine (hematuria), sloughing of the kidney "papillae" (also seen in patients who habitually take a lot of pain medications or in diabetics), reduced ability to concentrate the urine or excrete acid, and sometimes, excessive protein leakage in the urine.
